The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated the game as the 2001 "Computer Strategy Game of the Year", an award that ultimately went to Civilization III. However, the game won PC Gamer US' "Best Real-Time Strategy Game" and Computer Gaming World's "Best Strategy Game" awards that year, and was likewise named 2001's top real-time strategy game by Computer Games Magazine and GamePen. The staff of PC Gamer, Computer Gaming World and Computer Games Magazine praised the game's increased strategic depth compared to other real-time strategy titles; the last publication noted that Kohan "puts the 'strategy' back (if it ever truly was there in the first place) into real-time strategy". The game was nominated for the "Best Artificial Intelligence", "Most Innovative Game", "Best Single-Player Strategy Game", and "Best Multiplayer Strategy Game" awards at GameSpot's Best and Worst of 2001 Awards, which went to Black & White, Shattered Galaxy (twice), and Civilization III, respectively.
Kohan: Ahriman's Gift (known as Kohan: Battles of Ahriman in Europe) is a stand-alone expansion pack for Kohan released on November 5, 2001. The game allows play from an evil perspective, with the player leading armies of Undead and Shadowbeasts. It introduces an improved AI, new units and three new campaigns, as well as some new multiplayer maps and modes. However, it was criticized for not bringing enough new features to justify its cost.
The game was ported to Linux by Loki Software, shipping on August 24, 2001. A special edition was published in May 2002, featuring new heroes, maps and AI options, but not the expansion pack. A Kohan mod tool was released on June 17, 2002. A sequel, Kohan II: Kings of War, was released in 2004. A compilation, Kohan Warchest, is a download bundling the three Kohan titles Immortal Sovereigns, Ahriman's Gift, and Kings of War. It was released by Impulse in January 2011 and Steam in August 2011.
Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is one of the best real time strategy games with fantasy overtones, a game that offers you beautiful 2D graphics, super smart AI and confrontations that really put you through your paces, without the AI cheating or a lot of pre-scripted events. Overall, compared to a title such as StarCraft, Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is not a game where the units are as diverse between factions. Nope, the way the game is balanced is pretty symmetric, but still, due to the larger maps, the high number of units and the unbalanced distribution of resources on the maps each skirmish will be quite diverse and very interesting. Another aspect that is worth looking into is the possibility to stop the action at any time, especially when a heated skirmish takes place, to direct and redirect the fire at a moment's notice, so you may be able to get a hold of the enemies units. Also, the Kohan series has been faithful to its lore, as it is in this game, so the backstory might entice you as well, if you like medieval fantasy themed worlds. So, for real time strategist, this is certainly one of the best early 2000s games to download and play.

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns was released in 2001, and though it wasn't a blockbuster success, many of those who actually played it loved it. Its particular take on real-time strategy focused on the strategic control of companies of troops and on eliminating much of the tedious micromanagement often associated with the genre. As such, the game proved to be an innovative change of pace from the conventions of real-time strategy. The sequel, Kohan II: Kings of War, retains its predecessor's unique gameplay while also making key changes that distinguish it both from the original and from any other RTS games in the intervening years. And while some of the changes streamline a slickly designed RTS model even further, they don't detract from this great game's own winning formula. 041b061a72
